In an Instagram post, Slater Young explained why he and his family chose to remain silent amid intense public scrutiny. He said they waited for “proper investigations” to take place and for science- and evidence-based findings before responding.

“That tragedy was real and it deserves real answers–not speculation, not misinformation,” he said.
The celebrity engineer then cited findings from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, which stated that the primary cause of the flooding was the heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Tino. He added that the project’s infrastructure may have helped mitigate the impact of the floods.
“Typhoon Tino dumped over a month’s worth of rainfall on Cebu in one single day. And that amount of water would have flooded those areas regardless of what was or was not built,” he explained.
“Our detention ponds caught and held back up to 99.74% of the excess rainwater… releasing it slowly instead of letting it all rush downhill all at once… The science does not just say we did not cause the flooding—it says that the systems we have built in place help reduce it,” he continued.
While he acknowledges everyone’s opinions regarding the controversy, he stressed that he won’t be silent about the alleged misinformation about him and the development.
“We understand that for some, no study or finding will ever be enough. Grief does not follow a timeline and we respect that. But what we are here to say is this. Cebu deserves real solutions,” he shared.
“Real solutions can only come from correctly identifying the real cause,” he continued. That is work that is ongoing, and Monterrazas is committed to being a part of it. I am committed to becoming a part of it,” he concluded.
As of writing, the statement garnered mixed reactions from the public.
In 2023, the “PBB” alum revealed his new project, “The Rise at Monterrazas,” a Banaue Rice Terraces–inspired luxury residential complex in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. Following its unveiling, the project drew concerns from environmental advocates and the public over its potential negative impact on the environment and nearby communities.
However, the engineer-content creator and his team assured the public that the multi-million peso project underwent multiple expert evaluations and would be developed with “sustainability” in mind.
Then, in November 2025, Typhoon Tino struck Cebu, bringing unprecedented flooding and claiming the lives of nearly 100 people.
In the aftermath of the devastation, both residents and social media users pointed to the luxury development, alleging its contribution to deforestation due to the project’s large-scale mountainside construction.
