Shang Palace – Celebrate Chinese New Year the Fun Way at Makati Shang!

Suckling Pig Combination Platter

Funnily enough, despite being filled with different kinds of meat, my favorite part about the Suckling Pig Combination Platter was the jellyfish. Yum yum yum!

Dried Scallops, Shredded Chicken and Bamboo Pith with Crab Meat Soup

I had heard and read great things about the soup at Shang Palace before, but this was actually my first time trying one and I must say: it did not disappoint! The soup is one of the very few ones that I actually finished until I was scraping the bottom of the bowl. It was full of flavour and filled to the brim with scallops and chicken – scallops being my ultimate seafood weakness!

Stir-Fried Scallops with XO Sauce

Having said that, it shouldn’t be surprising that Shang Palace’s Stir-Fried Scallops were part of one of my favorite dishes that day. The minute I tasted one of the scallops, I knew that they weren’t local. They were just that good!

Braised Baby Abelone Dried Oyster with Black Mushroom and Garden Green in Japanese Bean Curd Skin

The same goes for the Braised Baby Abelone! While admittedly not for everyone, I absolutely loved this dish. I’m quite adventurous when it comes to food, though. So, if you are, as well, then you definitely need to give this dish a try. The mixture of the abalone, oysters, mushrooms and bean curd made this dish an unforgettable one!

Steamed Lapu-Lapu Hong Kong Style in Light Soya Sauce

I don’t know about you, but I always feel that Chinese food isn’t complete without some steamed fish. What I loved the most about the Steamed Lapu-Lapu in Shang Palace, though, is that they debone the fish in front of you – and they do it in less than 2 minutes! No joke!

They made it look so easy!

Another dish that completes any Chinese meal in my opinion is the duck. I prefer duck skin to be crispier, though, and I like it with the lumpia wrapper, which they sadly didn’t have with this particular dish.

Wok-Fried Glutinous Rice with Winter Meat in Lotus Leaf

I highly commend and recommend the Wok-Fried Glutinous Rice at Shang Palace. I’m not very fond of the rice served at most other Chinese restaurants because I like my rice sticky. As such, this dish was heaven to my eyes. It completed my meal perfectly and it was so incredibly flavourful; I could really taste the Winter Meat in it.

Crispy Fried Nian Gao

Who doesn’t love tikoy? At Shang Palace, you have the choice between three different flavours: traditional, yam and coconut. My favorite was the traditional (as seen above).

If you love tikoy as much as I do, then why not spread some fortune and goodwill this Year of the Horse by giving it as a gift to your friends, family or colleagues? Or just get a box for yourself. Haha. Shang Palace is selling tikoy at the Chinese New Year booth at the Makati Shang lobby until February 4!!! Hurry!!! 😀

Chilled Pumpkin Cream

If tikoy isn’t your thing, though (but why wouldn’t it be???), they also have this Chilled Pumpkin Cream, which is delicious but definitely isn’t for the non-sweets-eaters or the lactose intolerant. We were actually seated next to someone who was lactose intolerant and we felt sooooo bad for him because he was missing out on something sooooo delicious. Tsk.

Reason Number Three: I like to dream and hope.

When Chinese New Year comes around, predictions are always made on what your year will be like depending on what your Chinese Zodiac Sign is. Shang Palace even came through on that by giving us a booklet called “Luck in 2014” by Maggie Chan.

I read through it during our yee sang lunch and I must say everything was pretty spot-on in terms of my Fire Rabbi description. Whether or not their predictions on my health, love life and  career will be true though still remains to be seen. I’ll try and keep you updated through my Twitter account: @the_lil_miss 🙂

But for now, if you still aren’t sure where to spend Chinese New Year When in Manila, then think about heading to Shang Palace for a delicious set menu on January 30 (dinner is from 6pm to 10:30pm) or on January 31 (lunch is from 11am to 2:30pm and dinner is from 6pm to 10:30pm). A festive traditional lion and dragon dance and firecracker display will also take place at the Makati Shang lobby driveway on January 30 at 11pm and on January 31 at 12:30pm. Enjoy! 🙂
