Sebastian Stan Says Bucky Barnes Will Never Be Captain America In The MCU

A lot of Marvel fans have grown quite attached to Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky Barnes. Played by the charismatic Sebastian Stan, Bucky has been one of the crowd favorites since his first appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger. I can still remember how my heart broke when he fell off that freight train in the Alps.

However, Bucky made his return as the Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (obviously) and has since been growing in popularity. I don’t know if it’s because people feel sorry for Bucky or if they’re waiting for a redemption arc (or if they just find Sebastian Stan really, really attractive) but people have clung onto this character despite him having little to no lines in the movies following Captain America: Civil War.

On the other side of the fence are people who love Bucky Barnes because they associate him with Bucky in the comic books where he’s a lot more fleshed out and has starred in his own solo books. And comic book fans know that, eventually, Bucky Barnes takes on the shield and becomes Captain America for a while.

However, the state comic book Bucky was in when he took on the Captain America mantle is completely different from the state MCU Bucky is in today. Still, fans are rallying behind MCU Bucky and keep demanding for him to become Captain America after Sam Wilson.

Sebastian Stan, who now knows what Bucky’s future holds and has also read the comics himself, doesn’t seem convinced that Bucky should take on the shield in the MCU anytime soon, if ever.

He shared with Yahoo! News at San Diego Comic-Con when asked about Bucky becoming Captain America.

“I don’t know about that.” He added, “It makes no sense for him to… why would you give it to the guy that’s been trying to have a whole new history outside of the thing he’s been trapped by. I remember I found out about Falcon getting the shield the day we were shooting. I was like ‘Oh wow, this is the deal.’ But it makes sense. Sam Wilson has been his [Captain America’s] right-hand for a long time at this point.”

That makes sense, right? Although we never really know what’s going to happen in the MCU moving forward despite their major announcements, it’s safe to say that Bucky won’t become the star-spangled man. And besides, Sam hasn’t even started his run with the shield yet.

We’ll see Bucky Barnes return with Sam Wilson in Falcon and the Winter Soldier in the fall of 2020.
