In today’s hyperconnected world, staying safe online is more important than ever, especially in the Philippines, where digital scams are rising fast.

According to the 2025 Microsoft Digital Defense Report, the country ranks among the top 20 globally impacted by infostealer malware, with over 9,000 Windows devices affected by Lumma Stealer between March and May 2025. This calls for immediate action—both swift and informed.
Microsoft Philippines is committed to helping every Filipino stay safe online. With one of the largest security intelligence networks in the world—processing over 100 trillion signals daily—Microsoft has a unique vantage point to understand and combat evolving threats. Whether you’re watching teleseryes, shopping online, or sending money to loved ones, here are seven practical ways to protect yourself and your family online.
1. Don’t Be Fooled by Fake Faces and Voices
Imagine receiving a video message from someone who looks and sounds like your cousin—but it’s not really them. That’s the power of deepfakes, which are increasingly used in scams and impersonation attacks. Microsoft blocked USD 4 billion worth of fraud attempts in the past year, many involving AI-generated content.
If something feels off, trust your instincts. Verify through another channel like calling the person directly. And avoid sharing high-quality videos or voice recordings online unless necessary. These can be used to mimic you later.
2. Think Twice Before Clicking That Link
Phishing scams are everywhere—from emails pretending to be from your bank to texts about fake delivery updates. Microsoft found that scam emails created using AI are much more convincing—people are nearly five times more likely to click on them compared to regular scam emails.
Instead of reacting right away, pause. If you’re asked to log in, go directly to the official website. And if a friend sends an attachment out of the blue, check with them first.
3. Watch Out for Text Scams (a.k.a. “Smishing”)
Filipinos love texting—and scammers know it. Smishing attacks often come as messages about promos, job offers, or account alerts. They may include shortened links or suspicious numbers to call.
If you’re unsure, don’t click. Verify with your bank, telco, or delivery service using their official contact channels.
4. Be Extra Careful on Social Media
From Facebook to TikTok, social media is where we connect, share, and shop. But it’s also where scammers pretend to be brands, influencers, or even friends.
Before clicking on a promo or replying to a message, take a moment to check the profile. Is it verified? Does it look legit? When in doubt, don’t engage.
5. Double-Check Website Addresses
Scammers create fake websites that look almost identical to real ones—just with a tiny typo or extra word. For example, “micorsoft.com” instead of “microsoft.com” or “login.microsoft.com.secureauth.com” which isn’t from Microsoft at all.
To stay safe, use bookmarks for sites you visit often. And on desktop, hover over links to preview the actual URL before clicking.
6. Build Strong Digital Habits
Staying safe online starts with the basics. Use strong, unique passwords for each account, and keep your apps and devices updated to protect against known vulnerabilities. More importantly, enable two-step verification. Microsoft reports that multifactor authentication blocks over 99% of unauthorized access attempts.
These simple habits can make a big difference—especially in the Philippines, where mobile-first internet use is the norm.
7. Know What to Do If You’re Targeted
If you think you’ve been scammed, act quickly. Take screenshots of suspicious messages or websites, disconnect any remote access, and change your passwords immediately.
Contact your bank if financial information was shared, and report the incident to the National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT) or your local police cybercrime unit to prevent further harm. Finally, let your contacts know—they might be next.
Being online should feel safe, not stressful. By staying alert and informed, you can enjoy the best of the internet—without falling for the worst of it.
