When in Manila and craving for afternoon tea but not willing to spend too much, then The Royal Piccadilly afternoon tea sets are for you! It’s no denying that  The Royal Piccadilly is one of the few good and affordable British restaurants here in Manila. Aside from their Queen, the British are known for their posh tea gatherings and the sad truth is that here in Manila, afternoon tea sets are really expensive.

Based on my research, afternoon tea sets range from Php650 to Php2,500are , and mostly available in hotels. They serve the food buffet style, but of course, we can’t always eat at buffets and spend that much on a regular basis. The Royal Piccadilly solves this problem.

The Piccadilly Circus Set (335 Php) includes a pot of tea, 1 mini cupcake, 1 caramel bar, 4 tea sandwiches, 2 puffins & two scones with whipped butter and Jam.

 

What’s so astonishing about afternoon tea? Well, lemme give you a short history lesson on it. The quintessential British ritual was started by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, in the early 19th century. Since dinner was served at around 8 or 9 pm, she was left feeling hungry during the late afternoon. Let’s say at around 3 to 4 pm, which is the usual time people have their afternoon tea served nowadays. 

 

In short, it’s just like the British version of our merienda. But I guess, more posh? 

 

To avert the hunger, the duchess asked for tea, bread and butter and cakes to be served in her room. Later on, she would invite friends to join her and it became such a success, we now consider it to be a legitimate ceremony.
