4. You get to learn new skills.

 

 

After the city tour, we headed towards Dicasalarin Cove, which is a mere 15-minute drive away from the beach. From a high vantage point, the picturesque resort looked like a well-kept secret – a small pocket of white sand surrounded by lush greenery, neatly tucked into the side of the mountain range overlooking the Pacific. It proved to be a suitable venue for that night’s camp-out session. As the light quickly faded, a team of specially trained guides gave us a short course on proper packing, tent pitching, and cooking.

The great thing about stepping outside your comfort zone is that you’re almost always bound to learn something new – if not a skill, at least a new insight or perspective on the world. On my end, I was proud of the fact that I finally learned, with the help of my teammates, how to cook pork sinigang (I know, shame on me for not knowing this in the first place!).

 

 

3. You get to challenge yourself.

 

 

 

They say that, on the path to self-improvement, the only person worth competing with is yourself. Well, the outdoors is a good venue for that – a way to test your limits, whether it’s climbing up a steep cliff, rappelling down a waterfall, kayaking along a river, or catching a big wave.

At the end, you get a sense of accomplishment for overcoming your fears and changing the rules on what you can and can’t do.

2. You get to relax and take in amazing views.

Every once in a while, you need to stop and get outside to appreciate the little things that escape notice, like the way the sky turns pink and orange before sunrise or sunset; the way the moon’s silver light reflects on surfaces; the way the breeze brushes against your hair; or the way a troop of clouds can travel from one corner of the sky to another in just minutes. 

The beauty of it is you don’t need to travel far to experience such things – they’re all just outside your door waiting for your attention.

The people I meet outdoors are always an interesting bunch, ready to try out new things and willing to extend a helping hand when I need it. As long as you remain open, you’ll keep bumping into outgoing souls and adventurers who will make the experience a whole lot more fun and exciting.
