#RizalSelfie is the New Selfie
Political activitist Carlos Celdran has invented a new trend in taking selfies: the Rizal Monument Selfie. This means taking a selfie at the Rizal Monument in Luneta Park. His reasoning behind this is that DMCI’s Torre de Manila will obstruct the photo when taken from the Roxas Boulevard side.
Celdran poses for a selfie with Sen Pia Cayetano, who is also against the condominium
Torre de Manila, a condominium, is now being called by historical conservationists as the “pambangsang photobomber,” or the national photobomber.
DMCI Homes has released a statement, saying that Celdran’s claims are an exaggeration. According to the developer, “Our project is almost one kilometer away from the monument and even a bit on the right side. But to grab public attention, some parties took to the unethical approach of virtually juxtaposing pictures of our project right behind the monument.”
In short, they’re saying that the photos were Photoshopped.
DMCI said that it has the proper documentation for them to construct on the site. It was also cleared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
Because of this, Celdran challenged the DMCI board or executives to a selfie at the Rizal Monument. He said, “The further you back up from Rizal Monument, the bigger and uglier Torre de Manila looks in a photo. It’s basic perspective.”
Last night, our reader Ricky Aragon took the challenge and sent us some photos of t he Rizal Monument. According to him,
“Yesterday, on our way to Divisoria via Roxas Boulevard napadaan kami sa Rizal Park. Tekaโฆletโs see kung kayang kunan ang ating beloved Rizal Monument without capturing the building, sabay hatak kay yaya Len-Len (โmodel kaโ).ย Wala po akong kinakampihan sa kasong DMCI at Knights of Rizal. Enjoy the photos, and feel free to add your own shots sakaling madaan kayo sa Rizal Park (na Iโm sure matagal nyo nang hindi nagagawa)”
“Yesterday, on our way to Divisoria via Roxas Boulevard, we passed by Rizal Park. Wait, let’s see if we can shoot the beloved Rizal Monument without capturing the building. I asked yaya Len to be our model. I do not take any side in the DMCI and Knights of Rizal issue. Enjoy the photos, and feel free to add your own shots in case you pass by Rizal Park (which I’m sure you haven’t done in a while).”
Take a look at the photo below:
Point of reference: Normal POV, Front center, 3 meters away from the chain stanchion. With a little creativity, props, angle change and patience; you can photograph Rizal monument without the building, said our reader

We’re not sure if anyone from DMCI will take on Celdran’s #RizalSelfie, but why don’t you try it yourself? Share your photos with us on Facebook!
