Recuerdo Davao: A Restaurant That Feels Like Home

The first time I stepped into Recuerdo, I didn’t feel like a customer. I felt like I was being welcomed back.

The scent of warm kare-kare and Filipino cooking greeted me before any waiter did. The walls, textured and layered with paintings and vintage trinkets, held more than just decoration, they felt like stories waiting to be retold. The dining area? A quiet reclaiming of what used to be someone’s living room, transformed into a space for modern Filipino dining.

Recuerdo means “memory” in Spanish. Fitting, because this restaurant tucked into Juna Subdivision doesn’t just serve food; it revives something you forgot you missed.

In a city already blessed with solid Filipino food, Recuerdo still manages to stand out. Not by being flashy. Not by fusion gimmicks. But by doing what few new restaurants have the guts to do: go back to the basics and perfect them.

On two separate visits, Recuerdo impressed me with the kind of quiet confidence you rarely see in a young restaurant. The service was sharp, the mood intimate, and the food? The food was the kind that makes you pause mid-bite.

Stories You Can Taste

When I spoke to Chef JP Domingo, he described Recuerdo not just as a restaurant, but as an archive of family stories. Every dish on the menu is backed by a narrative. Every ingredient, chosen with intention.

Their produce comes from local farmers across the Philippines. This isn’t just about supporting the local economy. It’s about keeping the soul of each dish intact. Chef JP believes that good food is chemistry, of ingredients, sure, but also of people and the memories we attach to meals.

What to Order at Recuerdo Davao

Here’s what I’ve personally tried and what I’d come back for in a heartbeat:

  • Kare-Kare: Deeply savory, peanuty without being cloying, and paired with house-made bagoong that brings the whole thing to life.

  • Lumpiang Ubod: Crisp outside, tender inside, with sauces that balance sweetness and acidity.

  • Kinilaw na Malasugue: refreshing, tender, and meaty malasugue in sukang tuba and biasong.
  • Maja Blanca with Salted Caramel: Imagine comfort. Now pour salted caramel over it.

  • Cassava Cake with Torched Queso de Bola: The sharpness of the cheese balances the richness of the cassava. It’s unexpected and perfect.

  • Yema Cake: Moist, indulgent, and just the right amount of sweetness.

  • Auro Chocolate Crinkles: Rich but light. A grown-up version of your childhood merienda.

These are the kind of dishes that don’t just fill you up, they stay with you.

When I attended their Thanksgiving event on Independence Day, I also got to try some of the drinks they curated for the evening:

More Than a Meal

Recuerdo is still new, but it already knows what kind of restaurant it wants to be. It wants to feed you, yes. But it also wants to make you feel something.

There’s no need for theatrics here. The storytelling is subtle but strong. The flavors are familiar, yet elevated. The restaurant has mastered what many others try to imitate: depth.

In a time where dining out often feels transactional, Recuerdo Davao offers something different: it offers a sense of place. And if you grew up with merienda on mismatched plates and weekend lunches that ran too long, you’ll know exactly what that feels like.

It’s not just a place to eat. It’s a place to slow down, sit with your memories, and savor them one plate at a time.

Make time to visit. Bring someone who appreciates a good story and even better food. Then, come back when you’re ready to try the rest of the menu.
