Hakura Udon Brings the Noodle Capital of Japan to Davao

This Davao debut from Japanese restaurateurs offers hand-pulled udon, rich dashi broth, and heartfelt omotenashi service.

Something warm and deeply comforting is now simmering at SM Lanang Premier. On July 26, 2025, Hakura Udon opened its first-ever Davao branch, offering a taste of Japan’s noodle culture, built by restaurateurs who own concepts in Fukuoka, the noodle capital of Japan.

At the heart of it is Chef Kaneko Toyo Kazu, a Japanese chef who helped build the menu and experience. He served shrimp tempura and kakiage with pride, explaining that these dishes, alongside their signature White Curry Udon, are made to match Davaoeños’ love for savory flavors.

Hakura Udon isn’t a direct branch from Japan. Instead, it’s a concept led by Japanese chefs and partners who bring their culinary experience from Fukuoka. They aim to create something authentic yet local—something that honors the craft without feeling out of place in Davao.

The name Hakura combines haku (white) and sakura (cherry blossom), reflecting simplicity, freshness, and Japanese tradition. The noodles are hand-pulled every day, and the dashi—a slow-simmered broth essential to authentic udon—is made using ingredients flown in from Japan.

Customize Your Comfort

Each bowl at Hakura Udon is a blank slate you can build on. The team encourages guests to customize their orders with toppings like crispy kakiage, tender shrimp tempura, or a classic soft-boiled egg.

One standout is the White Curry Udon, topped with mashed potato and hiding a creamy white curry underneath. It’s savory, rich, and unique—something you don’t typically find in Japanese spots around the city.

What Is Omotenashi?

Omotenashi is a Japanese concept that goes beyond customer service. It’s about anticipating your needs and making you feel welcome, without needing to ask.

At Hakura Udon, omotenashi shows in the little details. The staff bows as you enter. The chef checks if your noodles are just right. The space feels warm without trying too hard. You’re not just eating; you’re being cared for.

What to Order First

White Curry Udon – A creamy, mashed potato-topped bowl with curry-covered noodles hidden inside.
Shrimp Tempura – Lightly fried, juicy shrimp
Kakiage – A crunchy, golden vegetable fritter
Una-don -Grilled eel over rice, with a sweet-savory glaze and perfect balance.

Why It Matters

Hakura Udon offers something new: Japanese comfort food made with care, served in a way that feels personal. It’s not part of a chain. It’s built by people who know their craft and want to share it genuinely.

Whether you’re new to udon or a longtime lover of Japanese food, this quiet spot at SM Lanang is worth visiting. You’ll walk in hungry—and walk out full, warm, and just a little more curious about Japan.
