According to the Vatican’s latest update on the pope’s health condition, after being admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital last Friday for bronchitis, continues to “present a complex picture.”

The statement said that the pope’s “polymicrobial infection, which has arisen in the context of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and has required the use of corticosteroid and antibiotics, makes the therapeutic treatment more complex.”

“A follow-up chest CT scan, to which the Holy Father was subjected this afternoon—prescribed by the Vatican medical team and the medical staff of the ‘A. Gemelli’ Polyclinic Foundation—revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional pharmacological therapy,” it reads.

Despite this announcement on the pope’s health condition, the Vatican affirmed that “Pope Francis is in good spirits.”

As the world learns about his current health condition, many pilgrims and tourists have gathered in Saint Peter’s Square as they pray for his recovery.

Pope Francis, who was the first pope from South America and the Jesuit order, is the current head of the Catholic Church and the sovereign of the Vatican City State. He became the 266th pope in 2013, following the resignation of the late Pope Benedict XVI.

Let us all offer our prayers for Pope Francis’ speedy recovery and good health.
