Every now and then, especially during the weekends, we find ourselves being called by the outdoors – whether it’s the beach, the mountains or just the open road. In a city like Butuan, it’s fairly easy to heed that call, even more so if the beach is just a mere 10 minutes away from you. Imagine this: you arrive in Butuan and you’re out on the open road with the beach readily in mind and just when you’re about to belt out a good song that just came out on radio, you’ve already found yourself at the parking of lot of this beach resort in Buenavista.

As their facebook page says, Ocean Bloom – Boutique Beach Resort is a family-run boutique resort that fuses Mediterranean and Filipino design into a unique and memorable resort experience. What started out as a resthouse for the family soon became a boutique resort open for guests. And why not? With 5 areas that can cater to guests, it certainly can become your quick getaway for the weekend.
For those who want to experience what it’s like to live in a classic Filipino nipa hut, you can choose the bamboo cottages for the night. You get to see and feel what it’s like to stay in a Nipa Bamboo Hut – the kind of homes that you no longer see in urban areas.
Mind you, the bamboo huts have no air-conditioning system, and that is exactly why I like it. If you’re lucky, the cool night breeze feels much better than than any air-conditioning system in the market. That, plus hearing the sound of the waves as it hits the shore can lull you to sleep in no time.
The rest of the accommodations are air-conditioned, so you can choose to stay in either their Santorini-inspired lodgings, their dormitory-type rooms or even in a main villa. You can even rent out the whole place if you’re getting married or having a company retreat; you can even rent it out for family reunions.
For those in the nearby towns, this place is also perfect for staycations. Bring a couple of friends, good food, have a cooler packed with ice and beer, carry along a guitar or a small bluetooth speaker, and you’re all set to enjoy the sunset and the rest of the evening.
This charcoal-colored beach is also low key in all the right ways: small town, small crowds, small waves. Even on weekends, the beach does not get that crowded. This scenic stretch of black sand sits in wonderful contrast to the lush green jungle of coconut trees that line the beach and offers an unparalleled view of the mountain ranges of Agusan del Norte.
The midnight-hue sands, crystal clear waters and private accommodations make this place the perfect weekend getaway spot for locals and tourists; its proximity to Butuan City makes it even more appealing.
At the time we visited, we were able to see a group of friends have a go at different styles and techniques of fire-dancing. It was wonderful to watch them and as guests; we felt like we had access to an exclusive show we didn’t even have to pay for. Later on, we found out that the owners of Ocean Bloom will soon hold events and even retreats that will showcase the different flow-arts talents and practices in the country.
Flow arts is a general term for practices like fire-dancing, juggling, poi, and object manipulation. As we wound down for the night, we hung out with the group and watched as they continued to enjoy the night of learning new tricks and showcasing what they do, I felt like this was something I would definitely look forward to should they push through with their plans.
