News Anchor Mike Enriquez prepares to undergo a kidney transplant

GMA 7 broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez is preparing for the possibility of undergoing a kidney transplant to hopefully put an end to his long battle with advanced kidney disease.

In a press conference for Dobol B sa News TV, Enriquez told reporters that he is currently going through dialysis three times a week and is waiting for the go signal from his doctors to proceed with the procedure should he be eligible. “Mawawala nanaman ako noon ng matagal, (I may be out for a while again, if ever)” he said.

Enriquez, who also underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery in September of last year, had to take a medical leave from work. “Ang sabi nila noon bago ako i-bypass, pagbalik mo niyan, […] parang daw sasakyan na bagong overhaul,” he remarked. “So ‘pag na-kidney transplant, hindi na kailangan magpa-dialysis ng tatlong beses sa isang linggo.

(“The doctors assured me before my bypass that, after the surgery, I will feel like a newly overhauled car. So if I undergo a kidney transplant, I don’t need to go through a dialysis three times a week anymore.”)

He also said that he doesn’t do anything without the clearance of his doctor.

Kung tatanungin niyo ako ‘Eh, anong pakiramdam ng katawan mo ngayon?’ […] Diba may kasabihan sa Ingles, ‘Listen to your body’? If I will do that, I am extremely well,” he added.

(“If you asked me what my body is feeling right now, […] there’s a saying in English, ‘Listen to your body’ right? If I will do that, I am extremely well.”)
