Nail Cheat Sheet: Find Your Perfect Nail Polish Shade Here Based on Your Skin Color!

I’ve always been a fan of nail services. I enjoy watching nail art tutorials on YouTube and browsing through Instagram for nail inspirations, but I’ve never been to a nail salon before. I would usually just get my nails done at home (via home service), or at a local hair salon, choosing a shade from a single tray of 10-15 nail polishes.

So looking at baskets upon baskets of nail polishes plus a wall dedicated to high-end brands at the newly opened I Do Nails Prima at Kapitolyo, Pasig while plotting my bi-monthly mani-pedi sesh was a bit overwhelming. With a rainbow of hues from cult favorites OPI and Orly, to organic nail polishes from Zoya (which is perfect for moms), to high-end brands like Chanel and Deborah Lippmann to choose from, narrowing my choice to a single shade seemed like an impossible task.

No matter how many times I’ve had my digits painted, choosing a nail polish color is still sa big beauty dilemma for me. And I know it’s the same for most ladies. Luckily, I got to chat with I Do Nails owner Monica Maceda-Ilacad and Prima branch owner, Karen Grace Seno, on how to find the perfect shade for every skin tone. They also gave suggestions on what nail polish to try next.

Find the perfect shade of nail polish for you below, based on your skin tone:

Porcelain

People with porcelain  skin tone are considered a cool skin type. To brighten your complexion, you can choose blue-based pinks, reds, and corals. You can also follow the pastel trend, or opt for lighter shades such as pale peach and beige which will look great on you as long as it has pink or blue undertones. Just try to avoid super dark colors which can make your skin tone look washed out.

What we recommend: Chanel Le Vernis in Rouge Red, Zoya in Bevin, and Orly in Flirty Girl

Fair

Dark colors such as navy blue look great on fair-skinned people, especially if it has a blue base. If you want to go for a softer look, you can try sheer pinkish nude shades and pastel lavender. But if you want to go bold and daring, you can sport red nails as long as it has a cool blue or yellow base undertone.

What we recommend: Chanel Le Vernis in Washed Denim, Zoya in Brigitte, and Deborah Lippmann in Blue Orchid

Medium

Medium skin tones look great in earthy tones and chocolate browns with red undertones such as dark burgundy and wines. If you want to go for fun, vibrant colors, you can opt for pink, blue, yellow or orange shades. Silvers, golds, and metallics will also look good on you as it enhances olive complexion. For a more sophisticated look, go for black, navy blue, or peach.

What we recommend: Deborah Lippmann in La Vie en Rose, Zoya in Austine, and Orly in Just Bitten

Dark

Dark complexions can wear just about any shade. What looks great are burgundy, vibrant purples, and plums. Another good option is bright colors like orange and pink which will pop against rich dark tones. In choosing pink shades, you can opt for neons and bright fuschias. Try to be careful with super dark shades such as blacks, grays, and deep purples, as  these shades could make the skin appear dull.

What we recommend: Deborah Lippmann in Sweet Dreams, Chanel Le Vernis in Particuliere, and OPI in I Believe in Manicures

If you want to be more adventurous, you can try their nail art services (they use Catwalk, a Malaysian high quality brand), or opt for charm accents. You can also choose from their wide range of Orly Gel polishes, or opt for a nail treatment with their Zoya Naked Manicure.

I Do Nails Prima has just about every nail service there is, and they are planning to expand their line of services in the future.

At the end of our chitchat, Ms. Karen reminded me that even if you want to try a shade that is not mentioned in the list above, you can still rock it as long as you are confident and happy with your choice. After all, it’s your opinion that matters the most.
