Maroon 5 Manila: “Sexy” Returns for a Third Time, With Special Guest The Cab

When In Manila, Facebook is an invaluable tool in learning about the latest news and trends relevant to our urban landscape. (That is especially true if you’re reading about this post because you saw it on Facebook.) Scrolling down friends’ posts two nights ago, I kept on seeing the poster of Adam Levine and Maroon 5, and there I learned that they’d be gracing us with another concert this September 18, 2012.

Which concert promotion is heading this event? More importantly, will we be invited to cover the event? These were the pressing questions on my mind as I clicked on the photo and looked closely on the details of the event.

Oh, our good friends at Dayly are managing the event. Great! As you may have observed, we’re not so lucky when it comes to featuring concerts from other promotions, but with Dayly we’re very lucky. Opening a new tab and logging on to my Yahoo! mail, I clicked on a message from the production company, telling us that they’d love to have us promote the concert with them. The trumpet sounds. The pinata pops. And the baritone voices of several men shouting “Yay!” accompanied by a few claps slowly fade into the imaginary background as I type my response: OF COURSE!

With Adam Levine as one of the coaches for “The Voice” and the long list of chart-topping hits under the belt of Maroon 5, it’s hard to believe that the band is just 10 years young. After a decade of music-making, Maroon 5 has remained true to their music, a flamboyant concoction of Pop, Rock, and Funk – sometimes more Alternative, sometimes more Soul – ultimately leading to their latest hit “Moves Like Jagger”.

Who can forget “Songs About Jane”, an album that was relevant for five – God bless you, FIVE!? – years from 2002 to 2006? “Harder to Breathe”, “This Love”, and “She Will Be Loved” kept us asking who Jane was to elicit such polar emotions of joy and pain in the universal experience of love. “Makes Me Wonder” kept many a broken-hearted company as Adam sings “So this is good-bye” again and again.

Adam Levine and Maroon 5 know what they have going for them, and they use it unabashedly. Sexy has always been part of the Maroon 5 dictionary, and Adam uses his God-given natural talent to make ladies scream with every song, every music video, every live performance. Read the lyrics of “Moves Like Jagger” and tell me that I’m wrong. Equally so, Maroon 5 is unafraid to collaborate with other artists to come up with smash singles like “If I Never See Your Face Again” with Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Gym Class Heroes in “Moves Like Jagger”, and Wiz Khalifa in their latest single “Payphone”.

In their fourth album “Overexposed”, Maroon 5 embraces their identity as Pop artists. “I feel like we’ve been standing on the edge of a cliff for a long time,” Levine says. “We’re a band that’s always been close to being full-on pop, but that’s rooted in a lot of other things: rock, soul, funk, the list goes on. ‘Overexposed’ is the first time we’ve ever completely embraced the idea of making pop music—of making songs for the radio. We just said, ‘Let’s not be afraid to do what we basically are.’”

But Maroon 5 is far from selling out. The bite in their songs still remain. Take “Payphone” as an example. You have a sweet, catchy song, and then in the chorus Adam sings, “All those fairy tales are full of sh*t. One more f*cking love song, I’ll be sick.” Oh, the spite, the grit, I love it!

When In Manila, get ready for some Pop, Rock, Funk, and a whole lot of Sexy as Maroon 5 Manila performs this September 18, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum for their “Overexposed” Tour.
