Jang’s road to receiving his degree was anything but typical. He first stepped onto campus in 2011 after enrolling in Hanyang University’s Department of Economics and Finance. Like many young men in South Korea, he hit pause on his education shortly after finishing his freshman year to fulfill his mandatory military service. He served from May 2012 through February 2014 before returning to campus as a civilian to pick up where he left off.
Upon returning to his studies, Jang resumed his track toward an economics degree. However, in 2015—during his junior year—his life took a dramatic turn that altered his career trajectory.

While hanging out at a local convenience store, Jang witnessed an armed robbery in progress. Showing remarkable composure and quick thinking, he assisted the police in apprehending the criminal on the spot. His heroic actions earned him official commendations from both the Gwanak Police Station and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
When local news broadcasts covered the commendation ceremony, television cameras captured his striking visuals and articulate demeanor. Almost overnight, clips of the brave student went viral, earning him the affectionate nickname “the handsome Hanyang University student who caught a robber”. Talent agencies immediately took notice. By 2016, the 24-year-old student signed with his first management agency and made his acting debut in the web drama Women at a Game Company.

As his acting career rapidly took off with breakout roles in projects like The Tale of Nokdu, Search, Daily Dose of Sunshine, and Like Flowers in Sand, maintaining a student schedule proved immensely challenging. Jang opted to continue his coursework at a drastically reduced pace, taking a minimal class load each semester between grueling production schedules.
This slow-and-steady approach stretched out his remaining credits, turning him into a fixture on campus over the course of a decade. The actor often embraced his extended tenure with humor. In 2025, during a guest appearance on former Wonder Girls member Ahn So-hee’s popular YouTube channel, Jang poked fun at his situation, lightheartedly joking that he had held the title of “college senior” for ten straight years.
His perseverance did not go unnoticed by fellow students. Ahead of the graduation ceremony, supportive fans and classmates celebrated his achievement by hanging personalized congratulatory banners across the Hanyang campus.

A New Chapter: Marriage to Actress Kim Seung-yoon
The long-awaited graduation is not the only major milestone on the horizon for the 34-year-old star. Adding to his personal achievements, Jang recently announced that he is getting married to fellow actress Kim Seung-yoon in October.
In a heartfelt handwritten letter shared on social media, Jang chose to break the news directly to his fans before his agency released an official statement.

“This coming October, I will be marrying someone I have been with for a long time,” Jang wrote. “As we spent a long time together and came to know each other in many different ways, we came to understand and cherish each other even more. Now, we have decided to be there for each other as our closest confidants and to build a fun and happy life together.”
Jang’s agency, BH Entertainment, confirmed the announcement shortly after, revealing that the couple plans to tie the knot in an intimate, quiet ceremony. The wedding will take the form of a Christian worship service attended exclusively by close family members and relatives.
