If you’re like me who’s been sitting for longer periods of time as we continue to stay indoors, then your back has probably hurt at some point. It’s not a great feeling and it can affect work when the pain gets bad.

If you’ve experienced some sort of back pain, here are four items to help relieve some of it:

Massage stick

A massage stick is exactly that: it’s a long hook with strategically placed rounded tips that you can use to massage hard-to-reach places in your back. The rounded tips apply pressure to break up adhesions in muscle fibers. The massage stick can also be used on the neck, hips, legs, shoulders, and feet. The device is modeled after the Thera Cane, which “provides temporary relief from muscular tension, stiffness, tenderness, and soreness.”

Foam roller

A foam roller is a cylinder that you roll on to release muscle knots and relieve soreness. It’s like giving yourself a deep tissue massage! Rollers come in different sizes and levels of firmness, depending on how much pressure you want to put on your body. Some even have ridges or knobs to target muscles deeply. What’s great about foam rollers is that they can also be used on other parts of the body, such as your sides, your core, your glutes, and your legs. When using on your back, make sure to stay in the upper area since the muscles and the shoulder blades protect your spine.

Massage gun

Massage guns are cool-looking devices that you can use to relieve yourself of back pain. It basically looks like a gun with a ball that helps relax muscles through percussive or vibration therapy in the form of rapid-fire pulses. Compared to body rollers, massage guns target a specific part of the body. According to CNN, massage guns don’t completely eliminate muscle soreness. Instead, they “increase blood flow to a specific muscle area, which can help reduce inflammation and muscle tension and break up those pesky knots that seem to linger after a hard workout.”

Yoga mat

Yoga is a great way to treat back pain as the movements stretch and strengthen the muscles. According to Harvard Health Publishing, yoga “helps alleviate back pain by increasing flexibility and muscle strength.” Not only that, this activity can help you manage stress and relieve anxiety.

Always make sure to consult your doctor before trying any of the items above.
