It was last August when news broke out that the film adaptation of “Darna,” supposedly to be helmed by Jerrold Tarog, was facing indefinite postponement due to public health concerns and filming restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, we’ve finally been given an update on the project: the film is no longer pushing through.
Instead, we’re getting a television series!
This announcement was shared on ABS-CBN PR’s official social media accounts after “Darna” lead actress Jane De Leon renewed her contract with Star Magic.
“Tuloy na tuloy na po ang paglipad ni Darna,” said ABS-CBN COO of Broadcast Cory Vidanes. “At ang gaganap bilang Darna ay walang iba kundi si Ms. Jane de Leon na patuloy na nagpapakita ng sipag at determinasyon sa paghahanda sa muling paglipad ni Darna.”
[Translation: Darna will continue to soar. And it’s none other than Ms. Jane de Leon, who has been showing resilience and determination all this time while preparing for her role, who will be portraying Darna.]
Reacting to the news, Jane said, “Parang nag-flashback po na in-announce po sa akin ang Darna. (It’s like I’m having flashbacks to when it was first announced that I will be Darna.) I’m so overwhelmed. I’m really happy to be here. I feel so blessed to be a Kapamilya.”
Jane was selected out of 170 auditionees and seven shortlisted actors to replace Liza Soberano, who dropped out of the role after experiencing a finger bone structure while shooting her teleserye “Bagani.”
