It’s a world filled with liars and deceivers, and “stupidly honest” Nao is just learning how to play the game.
“Liar Game,” a well-loved manga that ran from 2005 to 2015, just received its first-ever anime adaptation, which premiered on Crunchyroll in April 2026.

Written by Shinobu Kaitani, “Liar Game” follows the story of Nao, a college student who becomes entrapped in the Liar Game Tournament where she must succeed in every round or else be 100 million Yen in debt. She enlists the help of genius con artist Akiyama, who then makes it his mission to help Nao through the tournament, even when the stakes grow higher.
“Liar Game” has been adapted to television as both a Japanese and a Korean Drama, and even served as the inspiration for the global hit “Squid Game.” The anime adaptation, however, is what fans of the original manga have been eagerly waiting for, and it couldn’t have come at a better time—on the 20th anniversary of its debut in Shounen Jump.
With four episodes currently out, “Liar Game” has been a phenomenal watch so far. Studio Madhouse (known for producing many well-known shows like “Death Note,” “Trigun,” and “Hunter x Hunter”) has done a fantastic job bringing life to the source material. The story itself is gripping, keeping the audience on edge about how one can outsmart the game and emerge victorious while still staying true to one’s morals. There is a clear message here about how compassion and honesty can save any soul that has tread upon a dark path, though the significance of it remains to be seen as the series progresses.
The anime adaptation of “Liar Game” truly does more than revisit a classic manga; it’s definitely going to reignite the love of longtime fans and also entice a new audience to step into its tense, nerve-wracking world.
“Liar Game” episodes 1 to 4 are now available to watch on Crunchyroll.
