Hits and Misses – Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Movie Review

The plot

Right from the get-go, the movie has delivered well on action scenes. The American Ninja Warrior-style battle between the demigods at camp is fun to watch. More importantly, it gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the characters. Here, we see how cutthroat Clarisse is and how she’s hell bent on proving she’s the best in camp while we’re reminded how heroic our protagonist is when he chose to help a competitor over winning the challenge.

There’s no shortage of running here. A few minutes later, a mechanical bull–amazing computer graphics, by the way–breaks through the camp’s protective barrier and starts to wreak havoc. Once again, our heroes save the day by destroying the fire-yielding bull.

This is where the story rises. After the shocking realization that they’re all in danger, Annabeth and Grover came up with a plausible solution to save Thalia (the tree) and restore the barrier but it’s a journey so dangerous the god Dionysus was initially hesitant.

But that would mean they have to venture into the Sea of Monsters (popularly known today as the Bermuda Triangle).  Seeing no other way to save their home, Dionysus, decides to send the strongest warrior, which turned out to be Clarisse, to get the fleece.

But Percy wouldn’t want to sit on the bench, would he? As expected, he secretly follows the ops team with Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson.

As usual, they come across obstacles that keep them from getting their hands on the Golden Fleece easily. First, Grover gets kidnapped by Luke, the son of Hermes, who’s out to resurrect the powerful Kronos. The trio follows their nemesis’ trail to rescue their friend.

With the help of Clarisse, who they bumped into inside a huge sea monster’s belly, and a group of zombie crew, they were able to arrive at Circe’s amusement park where a vicious guardian Cyclops, Polyphemus, has Grover as hostage.

After battling with the cyclops, Percy was able to finally get his hands on the fleece but not without a price. Tyson gets shot by an arrow and plummets into a deep cliff. What happens next is a series of events that’ll make viewers grip the edge of their seats. Well, the succeeding scenes aren’t as engaging as Pacific Rim’s but they’re enough to keep you glued to the big screen. It is, after all, a flick for kids.

A powerful Titan is resurrected, a demigod gets killed, one gets the consequences of his actions, and Percy finally realizes that he’s not a fluke after saving the world from a terrible fate.

They all returned home with the Golden Fleece and the protective barrier at Camp Half-Blood is finally restored. Everyone is celebrating at camp, so you’d think that it’s a happy ending. Sort of. Percy and the rest gets one more shocker: Thalia, the dead girl whom the tree grew from and demigod daughter of Zeus, comes back to life.

Obviously, there’s third movie because Thalia’s resurrection raises the question of whether the prophecy that scared Percy could be referring to another child of one of the eldest gods.
