Cigarettes have thousands of chemicals, many of which damage the lungs. Smoking increases mucus which makes it harder for the lungs to clean themselves. It also makes airways narrower, resulting in difficulty in breathing.
Pollutants such as smog, cigarette smoke, and emissions from cars can damage the lungs. It’s impossible to avoid these things especially when outdoors, but changes at home can ensure that exposure to pollutants can be minimized. Try to avoid secondhand smoke, dust, and synthetic air fresheners and candles that may have chemicals. Make sure that homes are ventilated to keep the air fresh.
