Sad news for commuters: permanently extending the operating hours of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems is “not feasible,” the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.
In a statement, the transportation department noted that they recognize and understand the advantages of extended operating hours for commuters, such as convenience. However, permanently extended hours could compromise safety standards, as it would negatively interfere with the required maintenance periods for the rail systems.
“Extending operating hours on a permanent basis will compromise the ability of our maintenance teams to conduct necessary system checks and repairs,” the DOTr said.
The agency continued: “These activities are vital to guarantee the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our train services.”
The DOTr also stated that maintenance work on MRT and LRT lines takes place during non-operating hours. This period of time is needed to ensure that the daily operation of trains remains smooth, safe, and uninterrupted.
“Without sufficient time for inspections, technical adjustments, as well as urgent and regular repairs, the risk to safety and operational disruptions increases significantly,” it added.
While permanent extended hours are not feasible at the moment, the agency emphasized its tireless commitment to exploring alternative measures to improve the overall commuter experience, as well as maintaining the safety of the MRT and LRT.
“We appreciate and understand the public’s desire for extended service hours, especially for those with late-night schedules. However, public safety and system integrity will always be our top priorities. Our goal is to avoid breakdowns and ensure that trains operate at peak efficiency during regular service hours,” it reaffirmed.
The government agency maintained: “The DOTr continues to explore other safe, efficient, and reliable means of alternative modes of transportation such as the EDSA bus carousel and jeepneys that are available on a 24-hour basis.”
In early December, operations for major train lines in Metro Manila were adjusted to accommodate the anticipated surge of passengers in preparation for the upcoming holidays.
“On select days, our trains will operate earlier in the morning and later into the night to offer greater convenience to passengers during the holiday season,” transportation secretary Jaime Bautista explained, adding that the adjustments would also give more time for rail employees to spend time with their respective families on Christmas and New Year’s.
For commuters, it is advised to plan their trips accordingly and look for alternate routes. In the meantime, all passengers who use MRT and LRT as their modes of transportation are advised to remember the timetables of the adjusted train operating hours.
Malls nationwide have also adjusted their opening and closing hours in anticipation of the holiday surge.
