Here’s Why Indonesia Is Enforcing a Social Media Ban for Kids Under 16

Indonesia has started enforcing a nationwide ban on social media use for children under 16, with officials emphasizing strict compliance from digital platforms. The policy was introduced amid growing concerns about online risks such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and internet addiction.

Communications Minister Meutya Hafid called on all platforms operating in the country to adjust their features and minimum age requirements.

“We reiterate that there is no room for compromise regarding compliance, and that every business entity operating in Indonesia is required to adhere to the laws in force within the country,” he said.

Some companies have already taken steps to comply. Platforms like X and Bigo Live have updated their minimum user age requirements, while TikTok said it is working closely with the Indonesian government to implement measures affecting accounts of users under 16.

Indonesia’s move comes as more countries examine the impact of social media on younger users. Australia rolled out a similar policy, while lawmakers in the United Kingdom are also considering restrictions. In the United States, recent legal action has added to the conversation, with a jury ruling that major platforms contributed to harm through what was described as “addictive design.”

As these developments unfold, the broader discussion about balancing online access and child safety continues to evolve across regions.
