Halo-Hilo: The Halo-Halo Spot Making Waves in La Union

What’s a Pinoy summer vacation without enjoying a cool hearty serving of the classic halo-halo?

If you ever find yourself in San Juan, La Union this summer season, you’ve got to check out Halo-Hilo, the hole-in-the-wall halo-halo shack that’s making waves in The Surfing Capital of the North.

The roadside stall opened in early 2022, and it has quickly become one of the must-try food spots in the area.

Halo-Hilo serves a pretty compact menu, and that means that you can’t go wrong with whatever you choose to order.

They have two halo-halo variations on their menu: the Surfer’s Halo-Halo and the Classic Halo-Halo.

The Surfer’s Halo-Halo features 10 toppings and a generous amount of their tasty homemade ube ice cream. Their homemade ube ice cream is definitely a star of its own—I wish we could buy some by the pint! It’s creamy, smooth, and super flavorful.

If you opt for the Classic Halo-Halo, you get to enjoy the same 10 toppings (most of them are also homemade) with smooth and creamy shaved ice topped with leche flan.

Not a huge fan of halo-halo? You can also enjoy their other cold treats such as the Saba con Yelo (my personal favorite) and the Mais con Yelo. Both of these treats are also topped with some creamy homemade leche flan and pinipig for that extra crunch.

I loved how their ice—which is a huge part of these desserts—is so smooth and creamy. That factor definitely makes Halo-Hilo’s products feel more upscale, even if it’s still budget-friendly.

They also recently launched their Manga con Yelo which is a surefire hit with its fresh mango cubes, nata de coco, mango puree, and homemade vanilla ice cream.

Halo-Hilo may be a small shack tucked in San Juan, La Union, but their menu is packed with all good things. It’s a clear reason why many tourists add Halo-Hilo to their La Union itinerary! Take this as your sign to go do that road trip to La Union and check out Halo-Hilo.
