Government-Owned School Materials Were Sold At A Junk Shop Instead Of Being Distributed To Students

A bulk of Cebu Capitol-owned school supplies were discovered at a junk shop in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City. An anonymous citizen had alerted officials to the possibility of these school materials being corrupted. It turns out, a mass of government-owned school supplies like books, notebooks, and pencils had been sold to the junk shop by a government employee.

These school materials and history books were intended to be distributed to the students at the beginning of the school year last June. They were included in the province’s Local School Board P14.9 million budget for the procurement of school supplies.

Some 800 sets of school supplies and 100 history books were said to have been exchanged. Each set included one notebook, one pad paper, and a pencil placed inside a plastic envelope. Bernard Calderon, head of the Provincial General Services Office (PGSO), estimates the value of it at Php 34,000.

However, the employee in question is believed to have only made about Php 4,000 after selling the items at Php 1 per kilo. Calderon shares that the employee, who is still being investigated, admitted to the peddling of the supplies after he was given the task of clearing out the warehouse. The employee has worked in the Capitol for around 30 years.
