As much as possible, I try to support local brands and products. When it comes to self care items, however, it can be quite hard to find products that suit your hair type or skin type. I’ve had that difficulty for years now and always frowned at my trash bin whenever I threw away a plastic bottle of shampoo. But then, Gaea came into my life. Not only are Gaea’s products perfect for my needs, but they are also downright stunning to look at! Plus, they’re environmentally friendly – from the packaging to the products.
Ariane Danica Punsalan started Gaea after she received my Master’s Degree in Marketing Communications at De La Salle University. “It’s more than just establishing a business,” she states. “It’s about creating awareness that we can help minimize the threat of climate change, and to show young aspiring entrepreneurs that we can contribute and consciously make an effort towards producing more environmentally-friendly products and packaging.”
Gaea aims to promote plastic-free packaging, a healthier and eco-friendly choice especially for products which are commonly commercially packaged in single-use plastic bottles. All of their products are also all-natural, organic, handmade, and cruelty-free, patronizing sustainable ingredients that can be grown without destroying the environment.
Aside from helping the environment, I have also mentioned that their products look and smell downright amazing. The variation of colors and scents available make their products more alive. Every time I shower, I literally marvel at the beauty of my Gaea soap which looks like it came straight out of Jurassic Park (I’m a 90s kid – sorry na! Haha.). Instead of a dinosaur fossil, however, it has a beautiful flower preserved inside. As simple, conservative, and minimalist as they are’ they are a real thing of beauty!
Their shampoo bars also have their own personalities and target every hair condition, cleansing and nourishing your hair without stripping it of its natural oil. The manufacturing of natural health and beauty products is environmentally friendly because the ingredients are farmed and manufactured organically while the manufacturing of chemical-heavy health and beauty products puts harmful substances into the Earth’s air and water on an everyday occurrence.
All of that aside, 20% of Gaea’s income directly goes to the Environmental Legal Assistance Center, Inc. (ELAC), an NGO in Palawan. Many of the issues ELAC works on are related to access to and use of forestry and coastal resources, pollution, and land use and tenure. Gaea serves as a convenient way of supporting ELAC.
