Flights Could Cost More Soon as Fuel Surcharges Increase

Travelers could soon pay more for flights, both within the Philippines and abroad. The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) recently approved higher fuel surcharges for passengers, which will affect ticket prices starting in early April.

For domestic flights, the additional cost could range from around ₱253 for short trips to as much as ₱787 for longer routes, depending on the distance. International travelers, meanwhile, may see surcharges rise from about ₱835.06 to as high as ₱6,208.98, depending on the destination.

The CAB says the move is a response to rising fuel prices, driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have affected global oil supply. They also noted that gradually adjusting surcharges helps manage costs while allowing for quicker reductions if fuel prices fall.

Under the new system, domestic flights are charged ₱45 per liter of fuel for one-way trips. Shorter flights—less than 200 kilometers—could see smaller increases, while long-haul domestic routes could go up by several hundred pesos.

International flights are seeing similar adjustments. Nearby destinations like Taiwan or Hong Kong may add around ₱800 to airfare, while long-haul flights to the U.S. or other distant locations could see surcharges in the thousands.

Level 8, the new surcharge tier, is far from the maximum the CAB has planned, leaving room for further increases if fuel prices continue to climb. The move comes after the government also approved fare hikes for various land transport services.
