Fleetwood Mac guitarist and co-founder Peter Green dies at 73

Peter Green, considered “Britain’s most progressive blues guitarist” and co-founder of rock giant Fleetwood Mac, passed away at the age of 73. His family’s legal representatives made the sad announcement last Saturday.

“It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep,” said a statement from Swan Turton solicitors.

Green formed Fleetwood Mac with drummer Mick Fleetwood in 1967. Together, they convinced John McVie to join them as bass guitarist after promising to name the band Fleetwood Mac. The band’s debut album was released in 1968, titled Fleetwood Mac but also popularly known as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

Green is perhaps best known for writing the instrumental track Albatross, the band’s only number one hit until today. He also wrote Black Magic Woman and Oh Well, two of the band’s earliest hits. Fleetwood Mac’s first three albums were produced under his direction.

In 1970, Green left the band after struggling with his mental health.

“For me, and every past and present member of Fleetwood Mac, losing Peter Green is monumental!” Fleetwood wrote in a statement to Rolling Stone.

“Peter was the man who started the band Fleetwood Mac along with myself, John McVie, and Jeremy Spencer. No one has ever stepped into the ranks of Fleetwood Mac without a reverence for Peter Green and his talent, and to the fact that music should shine bright and always be delivered with uncompromising passion!!!”
