Here’s your first look at Disney’s first Southeast Asian Princess

Raya and the Last Dragon was announced last August to be Walt Disney Animation Studios’ next animated feature film. At the time, we’d only gotten a quick teaser showing a faraway figure but we’ve finally been given a clearer look at Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess.

Raya and the Last Dragon tells the story of a warrior on a quest to find the last dragon. Though set in a fantasy world, it is said to be heavily influenced by Southeast Asian themes and cultures.

The world as they know it is called Lumandra, “a reimagined earth inhabited by an ancient civilization.” Here, Raya will be driven by a need to save her kingdom which can presumably only be done with the magic of a dragon.

Raya will be voiced by Filipino-Canadian Cassie Steele (Rick and Morty) and is described as fearless and passionate with winning charm. Sisu, a water dragon who can transform into a human, will be voiced by Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians).

Sadly, Raya and the Last Dragon will not be a musical.

The project will be lead by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins as its co-directors while Kiel Murray serves as its scriptwriter. The film is slated to premiere on March 12, 2021.
