Epicurean Singaporean : A Food Festival at Circles Event Cafe

When in Manila, you can enjoy Singapore right now from August 1-10.  Singapore always conjures up thoughts of great food and  being the melting pot of diverse cultures, you could only expect the best of a fusion of Asian flavors in this city.  The good news is that Circles Event Cafe at Makati Shangri-la is bringing in an Epicurean Singaporean Food Festival this August.

Epicurean means devoted to the pursuit of sensual pleasure, especially to the enjoyment of good food and comfort.  And if you’re into good food, this is one great place to be this month.  Guest chefs from Trader’s Hotel Singapore prepare various specialty dishes from their homeland.

This piquant taste of Singapore is available for lunch and dinner.  Let’s take a look at what could tempt your senses to luxury.

Fruit Rojak is  is a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish that is sweet, spicy and sour.  That definitely hits the peg on how mixed Singapore is with this appetizer.

This is my favorite – LAKSA!  Coconut curry soup with noodles and shrimp!

Now this is what Singapore is famous for.  They have the best Hainanese Chicken rice.  It is afterall considered the “national” dish of the place and can be found almost anywhere from hawker stalls to big restaurants.

Tasty Chicken Rice Balls.  It actually is the main highlight in some Hainanese-owned shops.  You just have to taste this to see what the fuss is all about and you won’t be disappointed.

Satay with Peanut Sauce is definitely a crowd favorite.  It can be a hit with great complex of tangy and spicy flavors.

The Fish Head Curry is my personal favorite as it had the right amount of curry flavor to it plus the fish is really tasty.  I’ve never been a fan of fish head but this definitely changed my outlook on it especially with fresh firm catches of Circles Cafe.

Now the Tempeh Goreng is made from whole soybeans and has that  nutty, meaty, and mushroom-like taste to it.

Kway Teow is stir-fried rice-cake strips.  The Singaporean version is healthier than its Asian counterparts  with more vegetables and less oil.  The greens and bean sprouts gives off a fresh, crunchy texture that  I love.

And this is the superstar of the show!  I’ve had fond memories of eating Singaporean Chili Crabs with friends in Singapore and it simply is just the best.  It’s also regarded as Singapore’s unofficial national dish.  Stir-fried in a semi-thick, sweet and tasty tomato and chili based sauce, it really isn’t that spicy  and worth being part of the world’s 50 most delicious foods.

And who wouldn’t love oysters?  The Oyster Omelete  is perfect cooked just right in egg and spices. Seafood lovers, this could top your list.

To finish off all this Asian sumptuousness, have Pulut Hitam (rice pudding, a little bit like champorado), Pisang (fried banana) and Coconut Ice Cream (winner).
