Ed Sheeran excitedly announced the release of his new album, Autumn Variations, on September 29! On Instagram, he talked about his upcoming album, which consists of 14 tracks about 14 friends.
“Hello, everyone. The sun is shining, but autumn is coming. I have an album I’ve made called Autumn Variations. This is a record that I was sort of making at the same time as Subtract. It’s what me and Aaron [Dessner] went in originally to make,” he said in the video.
The “Thinking Out Loud” hitmaker shared that his inspiration in making the album is a composer named Edward Elgar, who has an orchestral work titled Enigma Variations that includes 14 compositions about a different one of his friends. He mentioned that he wanted to write 14 songs as well and base them in autumn.

“I find that autumn is a season with a lot of change coming out of summer. People are getting out of relationships, getting into relationships, being very lonely. I just found my friends and I were all going through sort of different things in autumn, and I just thought it’d be an interesting subject to write about,” Sheeran explained.
Autumn Variations will be his first album under his own record label, Gingerbread Man Records, which was launched in 2015. Meanwhile, in the caption, he opened up more about the challenges he and his friends went through and how writing songs helped him understand his feelings.

He wrote, “When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on, and when I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time. There were highs of falling in love and new friendships among lows of heartbreak, depression, loneliness and confusion.”

The 32-year-old also said that he and Aaron “clicked immediately” when they recorded his previous album, Subtract.
“We wrote and recorded non-stop and this album was born out of that partnership. I feel he has captured the feeling of autumn so wonderfully in his sonics and I hope everyone loves it as much as I do. Autumn Variations out September 29th, preorder and presave now,” he concluded.
In the comments section, fans expressed their excitement over the upcoming album! He even uploaded a photo of an artwork that might be related to it.
In May 2023, Sheeran released his sixth studio album, Subtract, with a lead single, Eyes Closed.
