Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any more eventful, we’ve got some earth-shaking news… literally.
A little past 3 AM the tremors of an earthquake could be felt in select parts of Metro Manila. And no, you weren’t imagining things. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS for short, reported a 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Occidental Mindoro. The exact location was northeast of Lubang Island at a depth of 85 kilometers.

The earthquake reached various parts of Metro Manila, with Intensity III readings for Malabon, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Pateros, Quezon City, and Taguig. On the other hand, Makati, Manila, and Paraรฑaque were hit much harder with Intensity IV readings. Meanwhile, Intensity III was also reported for Tagaytay (Cavite), Calapan and Puerto Galera (Oriental Mindoro), and Calatagan and Lipa City (Batangas).
Netizens report feeling the earthquake from the comfort of their homes, with the hashtag #earthquare trending all over Twitter at 22.7K tweets as of 8:48 AM.
PHIVOLCS adds that there may be the possibility of an aftershock, but no damage has been recorded as of now.
