Cupcakes and Cookies at M&L Bakery: A Silver Lining of Homemade Desserts

 

Cupcakes have evolved from just the typical recess snack to a serious art form.

I still remember opening my elementary lunch box to Lemon Square’s Cheese Cake – literally cheese-flavoured mini cakes – and choking on large bites whenever I was feeling a little greedy. Now, cupcakes are bite-sized trendy desserts that are sometimes overhyped and, well, overpriced.

M&L Bakery removes the commercial aspect of its baked goods, leaving behind pure and simple homemade goodness. Single-handedly baked by the owner herself in her own home oven, M&L offers quality cupcakes to its growing clientele. 

Cupcake lovers are given the option for customization where they are encouraged to pair certain cake bases – including scrumptious flavors like vanilla, oreo, red velvet and chocolate – with equally delicious icing tops.  

Not up for all that thinking? M&L Bakery also has a collection of ready-made flavors. Seen above are their Chocolate Chip and Oreo variants, which literally have Oreo cookies as their base. 

With a personal addiction to cheese, my favorites (and highly recommended ones) include the Red Velvet and Carrot Cupcakes, which make use of fluffy cream cheese icing. Props to the miniature hearts that add cute details atop each cupcake!  

What’s fun about M&L is that the owner is experimental, dishing out interesting flavors and unique designs for particular occasions. I remember taste-testing a peppermint cupcake last year in time for St. Patrick’s Day. For the recently passed Mother’s Day, on the other hand, the owner hand-designed each cupcake herself in the style of an elegant (and edible!) rose. 

 

A recent venture of M&L’s owner is her fondant creations, which bring cupcake customization to a whole new level. Clients may opt for a different design per cupcake in a box of 12. 

 

As you read this, M&L continues to evolve in its craft. Cupcakes are not the only bestsellers that they have, either. In fact, another recent endeavour has brought a steady following: her home-baked cookies, which are another hit, carrying labels like Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Peanut Butter and everything in-between.  

 

I actually really crave these deep dish cookies. Literally as mouth-watering as deep dish pizza (but in a sweeter and more indescribable way!), the first bite in itself is already addicting. Being able to dig my teeth into cylindrical cookies topped with real Hershey’s chocolate gives me a real rush. If you’re wondering what the inside of a deep dish cookie looks (tastes/feels) like, just imagine almost fully cooked cookie dough deliciously filled with gooey goodness!
