Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he is staying at Real Madrid, in an interview with a Spanish newspaper.
The football superstar told sports newspaper Marca: ”To win important trophies with my club and the personal honours last season was brilliant, to do it again would be nice.”
This confirmation has come in the midst of rumors of Ronaldo’s departure, which were first reported last month in Portuguese newspaper O Globo.
According to the reports, Ronaldo apparently felt “abandoned” by his club over his run-in with the Spanish tax authorities.
Ronaldo, 32, has been served a court order to appear before a judge near Madrid on July 31 to answer four counts of evading 14.
7 million euros (or roughly P864 million) in taxes.
Ronaldo has insisted he’s innocent in an interview with O Globo, admitting he threatened to leave Real over the investigation.
According to Forbes Magazine, Ronaldo is currently the highest paid athlete in the world with 83 million euros (roughly P4.
8 billion) in 2016-2017.
