It seems like Coldplay’s retirement is happening for real. In an interview with New Zealand radio DJ Zane Lowe, Chris Martin talked about the band’s future plans, revealing that they intend to release only 12 albums.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. I promise,” he said. “Because less is more and for some of our critics, even less would be even more. It’s really important that we have that limit.”

He emphasized that their decision to limit their discography was influenced by their musical heroes, including the Beatles and Bob Marley.
“There’s only seven Harry Potter. There’s only 12-and-a-half Beatles albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes. Also, having that limit means the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve,” he explained.
Chris also stated another reason is his desire for his bandmates to have their own space outside Coldplay, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves.”
Despite Coldplay’s retirement announcement, he reassured fans that he and his bandmates, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, will continue to collaborate on side projects in the future. However, he didn’t provide further details about their retirement, including the target year.
Coldplay is known for their hits “Yellow,” “Fix You,” “The Scientist,” and “Viva La Vida.” The band is set to release their 10th album, “Moon Music,” on October 4.
