Earlier today, we shared a few photos of the air pollution in Metro Manila. Though it’s not often that we see photos like this, the problem IS real and sadly, the air over Manila is like that almost every single day. So what can we do to prevent it from getting worse? Well, ADB group of companies suggests taking the bike instead, and to help, TUTUBI, the bike rental service is now available in BGC!
Facebook page Bayanihan Central posts these photos with the following caption:
“Spotted in Bonifacio Stop Over, BGC: Tutubi . Apparently, bikes for rent. There’s a ticketing system (you need to get a card via their website), rent a bike, then park it in any of the other stations around BGC. According to the technician installing the machine, there are planned stations at Boni High Street and Market Market. Yey!
Notes: project of ADB. First installed in Ortigas center (now transferred to BGC).
Anyone have additional info, links? Pls share. Thanks!

So, what do you guys think of these bikes? It’s definitely one solution to a cleaner Manila don’t you think?
I think it looks great! We’re moving closer to being able to live in Manila without needing to own a car. Check out dashcarmanila.com… they’re trying to bring carsharing to the Philippines
With only a handfule of units (I assume based on the photos), how can you commit users to loyalty of using the bikes everyday when there is no certainty of one being available for sure? Put hundreds or even thousands within business districts and sorrounding areas, then you’ll see adoption.
the problem is not intracity mobility, rather it is intercity connectedness that makes the lives of the commuting public difficult. these bike sharing systems work for people who already live, work, and play in planned unit developments, but the reality is people who work in these CBDs and PUDs live outside or in the periphery, and biking from their residential area to their place of work is still a high risk mode of transportation and sometimes impractical. proposed solution: dedicated bike lanes and brt with bike racks, and let’s sincerely ask the car owner, “would you leave your car at home if you can take public transportation and use a bike instead?” if majority of the car owning public says no, then its time for government to take a hard policy stance on traffic management by enforcing higher car levies and automated tolls during peak hours.
