Just as the world celebrated Olympian Carlos Yulo’s double golden triumph at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, a different kind of spotlight turned towards the gymnast and his family. The recent viral posts of Yulo’s mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, expressing support for Japan instead of her son who represented the Philippines have ignited a controversy. Now, the gymnastics star addressed the unexpected drama unfolding around him.

“May mga gusto lang po akong i-clarify,” Carlos Yulo began in the 7-minute TikTok video. This is following his mother’s interview with the press. The world renowned athlete went straight on saying, “Unang-una po ‘yung 70K na incentives po na sinasabi niyang from World Championships 2021 po… unang-una po, 2022 po ‘yun, at hindi lang po 70K and na-receive ko po dun. Alam ko, six digits po ‘yun dahil dalawa po ‘yung nakuha kong medalya.”

“After non, mga bandang December, umuwi ako sa Pilipinas. Nagkikita kami ng mama ko at hindi sa’kin sinasabi na na-receive na niya pala ‘yung incentives ko from World Championships,” Carlos Yulo revealed. “Hindi ko pa po malalaman na na-receive na niya po ‘yung incentives ko kung hindi ko pa po hinanap.”
“Never ko na po na-receive ‘yung incentives ko po na ‘yun at never ko na rin naman po hiningi ‘yun sa kanila. Binigay ko na at wala na po ‘yun sa’kin.”
“Ang sa’kin lang naman, gusto kong malaman kung san napunta po ‘yung incentives ko na ‘yun,” Carlos Yulo explained the only thing he is asking from his mother. “‘Yung principle po kasi dito wala po sa liit o laki ng incentives po na ginagalaw niya, kundi po sa pagtago at paggalaw niya nang wala ko pong consent.”
Next, Carlos Yulo discussed the issue of his mom reportedly labeling his girlfriend Chloe San Jose a “red flag.” According to him, his mom judged Chloe prematurely based on her dressing style and behavior, given that Chloe grew up in a different culture in Australia. “And ‘yung about po sa ‘mauubos po ‘yung anak ko’,” Carlos Yulo said referring to his mom’s earlier statements, “si Chloe po, may sarili po siyang income.”
“Paano po ako mauubos? Gaya nga po ng sinabi ko, si Chloe po, may sarili po siyang income and lahat po ng bank account ko, nasa mama ko po. May mga instances po talaga na si Chloe ang sumasagot sa’kin that time po.”
“Bukod sa incentives po, nasa kanya din kasi ‘yung bank accounts ko sa monthly allowances sa pag-gygymnastics ko,” Carlos Yulo expounded. “And nung nakuha ko na ‘yung bank account ko po na ‘yun, doon ko po nalaman na inuubos niya po ‘yung laman nun. Nasa akin po ‘yung bank statement ng mga withdrawal po na ginagawa niyang ‘yun.”

It didn’t end there. Carlos Yulo also mentioned how his mom stated that their rift began because of Chloe. This time, however, he agreed. “Opo, totoo po ‘yun, dahil ever since, unang una pa lang, ayaw na niya kay Chloe kahit hindi niya pa po nakikita, or nakikilala in person,” he detailed. “Mas nagkalabuan po kami nung nagbigay po ako ng boundaries sa relationship ko kasi pinaglaban ko po si Chloe, dahil gusto ko po siya eh.”
Furthermore, Carlos Yulo talked about the training camp issue that his mom brought up with the press. “Usually, ‘pag magte-training camp kami, palaging naka-hotel. And miscommunicated ‘yun na dun pala sila sa akin mag-sstay,” he corrected. “Hindi rin totoo na pagpunta nila don, nung dalawang bata, dapat wala na si Chloe kasi sabay-sabay silang pumunta doon.”
“Winelcome naman namin sila talaga, nag-prepare kami para sa kanila, so hindi ko alam kung bakit ganon ‘yung mga sinasabi niya,” he added.
“Bilang nakakatandang kapatid po, bilang girlfriend ni Chloe, at bilang ate’t kuya po, kami po aalagaan po namin sila. Hindi namin gagawin ‘yung mga iniisip niya na ganon. Ang dumi niya mag-isip at hindi appropriate ‘yon… disrespectful ‘yon para sa akin and kay Chloe po.”
Carlos Yulo also explained that guests are allowed at his apartment, and the contract contains no restrictions on welcoming them. In fact, his former coach even told him to invite Chloe to Japan so they could hang out.

As for his mother’s notion that Chloe is dragging him away from her, Carlos Yulo recalled, “Months before nun, kasi uuwi ako nun, parang three days ‘yun, sinabihan ko na sila na magsspend time ako with Chloe.”
“Nagpunta kami [family] sa Baguio, sinama ko si Chloe… Nakikipaghalubilo naman kami, hindi naman ako nilalayo ni Chloe,” he remembered. In fact, according to them, Chloe was the one who suggested fun biking activities for the kids.
The couple even included screenshots of their conversation with Carlos Yulo’s mom, which escalated to involving Chloe’s parents after numerous social media posts by Carlos Yulo’s mom. Despite all of this, Chloe said, “my family still welcomed them, treated them with respect, and with no judgment.” Chloe was referring to what Carlos Yulo’s mom had been saying about Chloe and their relationship, as well as eventually leaving the group chat with her parents.

Nevertheless, the Olympic gold medalist still expressed his gratitude towards his mom. “Maraming maraming salamat po, ina-acknowledge ko ‘yung pagcocongratulate niyo sa’kin,” Carlos Yulo said, “pero nagf-flashback pa rin po talaga sa’kin ‘yung masasakit niyong sinabi sa’kin at ‘yung mga hindi niyo pag-wish well sa’kin.”
“Tumatatak po ‘yun sa’kin talaga,” he emphasized.
He also left a message for his mom: “Ang message ko sa inyo ay, na mag-heal kayo, mag-move on, at napatawad ko na kayo a long time ago po. Pinagp-pray ko na maging safe kayo palagi at nasa maayos po kayong kalagayan lahat diyan. Tigilan na po natin ‘to, at i-celebrate na lang po natin ang mga ginawa pong paghihirap, pagsasakripisyo ng mga bawat atletang Pilipino dito sa Olympics.”
