On April 25 and 26, the Ateneo de Manila University’s premier student-led orchestra will take its 15-piece repertoire to the stage. Featuring a mix of classical works, movie and game scores, ’80s hits, and modern pop anthems, this concert is for anyone seeking an enjoyable night of music. Among the expected pieces are Justin Hurwitz’s La La Land soundtrack, tunes from Mondstadt in the game Genshin Impact, and “Go the Distance” from the Disney movie Hercules. These selections center around the concert’s theme, “Beyond”—a reflection of the Blue Symphony Orchestra’s (BSO) journey in redefining and exceeding the limitations they face as they continue to move forward.
The Adventure, So Far
Being part of a student-led orchestra within a university without a conservatory is no easy feat. Limitations on all fronts—financial, logistical, and musical, among others—have challenged members from fully realizing their potential. However, these same constraints have allowed BSO to cultivate strong, tight-knit bonds among its performers and production team. Over the years, they have faced challenges as one community, finding creative solutions that promote inclusivity, interdependence, and a sustained love for music.
Unlike traditional orchestras, performers and production members are welcomed regardless of skill level, orchestral arrangements are written by members themselves, and backstage operations are handled by students. The members’ families and alumni have also played a vital role in this shared journey—making this year-end concert not just a destination achieved through effort, but one fueled by passion, love, and unwavering support.
As they step into the concert hall, the members carry a shared belief: performing in this orchestra has never been about prestige, but about the joy of playing together and creating music that resonates with many.
