Upon consultation with her doctor, Maloi learned that she had polycystic ovaries, a finding that left her in tears as her mother comforted her. “Sabi ko, mawala na cellphone ko, iPad ko, lahat ng mga material things ko, ’wag lang ako magka-PCOS. Ganun ’yung thinking ko,” she admitted.
Despite the difficult news, Maloi said she’s trying to stay positive while coming to terms with her diagnosis. “Ang sad lang kasi as someone na nanggaling sa malaki at masayang pamilya, syempre nakikita ko na sarili ko na, ‘Ah, someday, ganito. Gusto ko rin ng ganito,’” she shared.
She continued, “’Di naman ako napanghihinaan ng loob… optimistic ako… [pero] may lungkot din sa part ko and ’yun ’yung kailangan kong tanggapin, mas kailangan ko alagaan ’yung sarili ko.”
Maloi encouraged women to get checked for PCOS if they can, emphasizing how early diagnosis can make a big difference. “‘Yung mga ganitong procedures, may malaking impact siya sa life mo and makakatulong siya sa’yo and sa future mo,” she said.
According to the singer, PCOS has affected several aspects of her life—her period schedule, weight, and mood, among others. Thankfully, she’s found strength in her BINI sisters, who continue to support her journey toward better health.
“We take our health seriously,” she added, noting that the group even got vaccinated for cervical cancer recently. “Prevention is better than cure.”
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. It can cause irregular periods, hormonal imbalance, and small cysts in the ovaries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 6 to 13% of women are affected by PCOS, with up to 70% of cases going undiagnosed. It’s also one of the leading causes of infertility worldwide.
Common symptoms may include:
- Irregular, heavy, or absent periods
- Acne or oily skin
- Excessive facial or body hair
- Hair thinning or male-pattern baldness
- Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
Though there is no known cure, the condition can be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and regular check-ups.
If you experience similar symptoms, it’s best to consult your doctor or OB-GYN to get tested and start managing your health early.
Maloi’s story serves as a reminder for women to pay attention to their bodies and seek medical help when something feels off.
Early detection and awareness can make a big difference in managing conditions like PCOS.
