On November 17, the seven-year-old was given the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards for co-writing “Brown Skin Girl,” a track included in her mom’s curated The Lion King: The Gift album released last July.
“Brown Skin Girl” is a song that celebrates women of color and features Blue Ivy’s prominent vocals. Since its release, it has sparked a social media movement where women around the world post selfies to express pride in their naturally dark skin color.
Blue Ivy shares the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award with her parents and ten others, according to the Associated Press.
