Avenged Sevenfold first caught this Rock-loving writer’s attention when their third album “City of Evil” gained mainstream success. “Bat Country” and “Seize the Day” are two hits that showcase the range of musicality the band possesses. For me, it was lead singer M. Shadows’ uncanny ability to transition between melodic tunes and gritty screams paired with lead guitarist Synyster Gates’ fret-burning riffs and solos that hooked me to eagerly await for Avenged Sevenfold Manila. Their self-titled fourth album contained some of my favorite singles in “Afterlife” and “Almost Easy”. (Guitar Hero and Rock Band enthusiasts, you know why these songs ROCK!)
In 2009, Avenged Sevenfold’s drummer The Rev passed away before their fifth album “Nightmare” could be completed. His death threatened the band close to breaking up, but Avenged Sevenfold sublimated their grief into creating an album in memoriam to The Rev. Asking former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy (note: Dream Theater – THE band I would DIE to listen to LIVE!) to command the drums, “Nightmare” debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.
