If we don’t count Sailor Moon (because what little girl didn’t love Sailor Moon when it came out?), Death Note was the first anime that I truly and deeply fell in love with. I loved the plot, the characters, and how Light’s mind worked and I spent many sleepless nights avoiding schoolwork to get through the anime. (Wag niyo akong tularan, please.)
When the live-action American adaptation came out in 2017, I was excited….. but got quickly disappointed. Lol. So why am I excited for yet another live-action adaptation? This time, the Duffer Brothers will be taking the helm – and it’ll be a series instead of a film. And if Stranger Things is anything to go by, then it definitely won’t disappoint!
Right after giving us a mind-blowing Season 4 of Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers announced their new production company today for film and television projects. Aptly named Upside Down Pictures, this is part of their overall deal with Netflix, which “aims to create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up – stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”
The live-action Death Note aside, other projects they are currently developing include:
- An original series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance)
- A series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s The Talisman alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television to be created by Curtis Gwinn
- A new stage play set within the world and mythology of Stranger Things
- A live-action Stranger Things spin-off series based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers
