When In Manila, I have always been a fan of American Idol, since it’s 1st season in 2002. Unfortunately, I was never able to watch any of the Idols who went here for a concert. Heck, not even those who went for a mall show. This time I was lucky! American Idol Live Tour 2011 was held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Sept. 20 & 21. I was lucky enough to watch on the first night.

All 11 finalists of AI season 10Thia Megia, Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Stefano Langone and winner Scotty McCreery gave their best. The concert started with a recorded introduction from the host Ryan Seacrest, which put goosebumps on my goosebumps. Before it started, I could hear his voice in my head saying “I am Ryan Seacrest, and THIS is American Idol!”. It was like watching the finals at the Nokia Theatre in LA!

The show had two parts, first of which showcased the American Idol 2011 first 6 who got eliminated. Nevertheless, all of them gave their best shot. It felt like each of them was still fighting for the most coveted title. The girls opened the show with a breathtaking performance of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”. As always, the ladies of this batch never fail to impress.

Their repertoire was a mix of solo, duet, and group performances. From the first half, I personally loved Pia Toscano’s rendition of Alicia Keys’ hit “Empire State of Mind”. Her single “This Time” was also a big hit with the audience with all those high notes. During the season, I always thought Pia was just one those so-so eye candies that had to be part of the show. Clearly, I was wrong. Another surprising charmer was Stefano Langone, who had some pitch problems while singing “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. Despite that, he knew how to work the crowd. He also sang Usher’s “DJ Got Us Falling In Love” where girls went wild when he ended the song by going shirtless and showing off his physique.

I always found Paul McDonald kind of odd, with his weird dancing and all. But this one also owned the stage when he sang “Maggie May”. One of my favorite solo numbers was that of Naima Adedapo. She was a ball of energy with her rendition of J.Lo’s “On The Floor”. Hers was one of the shortest stints on-stage but definitely roused everyone for the rest of what’s to come. Our kababayan Thia Megia sang Selena Gomez’s pop hit “Who Says?”. Unfortunately though, she also didn’t stay very long in the spotlight. She, like the rest, often sang and danced in the background.

Now we move on to my absolute favorite Casey Abrams. This “bushy” singer can’t get any more low-profile than appearing in board shorts for the first time when the boys came out to sing “Animal”. The cheering and clapping even grew louder when he performed the bass version of Santana’s “Smooth” and Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe”. His duet of “Moanin’” with Hailey Reinhart seemed like icing on the cake of his set. By then, my goosebumps even doubled all over. The first half of the show ended with a very colorful number of all finalists (sans Scotty) singing Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You”.

Runner-up Lauren Alaina kicked off the second half, making way for the rest of the top 5. She sang her single “Like My Mother Does” and other country songs in her glammed-up cowgirl outfit, complete with sparkling boots. Self-proclaimed Rock Metal singer James Durbin wowed the crowd as he sang Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” with a grand entrance from the back. He sang his way to the stage and shouted “Sigaw na” every once in a while. I think of all the finalists, he enjoyed his set the most.

5th placer Jacob Lusk delivered as expected. I love the fact that he showed his wide vocal range as he sang “Never Too Much” and “You’re all I Need To Get By”. But like the other girls, his was a very short stint.

Soulful singer Hailey Reinhart finally hit the stage with the songs “House of the Rising Sun” and “Benny and the Jets”. She sang just like she did in the competition and got her well-deserved cheers and applause. I would have loved it better though if she included Adelle’s hit “Rolling In the Deep”.

After almost an hour and a half, American Idol Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery finally emerged. Now this one is definitely the crowd favorite as the girls shrieked over his songs, especially his single “I Love You This Big”.

The 18 year old Idol grew more fans by the minute as he kept saying “Mahal Kita” in his deep country voice.

I have been to many concerts and I must say this is one of the most enjoyable. It was a feast for the senses as the finalists gave a taste of rock, jazz, pop, and dance for all to consume. Different genres were showcased under one roof. Now I understand why their season was the most watched and broke all the voting records.
