The town of Fujiyoshida, a popular destination near Mount Fuji, has cancelled its annual cherry blossom festival this year amid concerns about the impact of heavy tourist crowds on local residents.

Fujiyoshida is known for its scenic views of Mount Fuji lined with cherry blossom trees, making it a go-to spot during sakura season. At the peak of spring, the town reportedly welcomes up to 10,000 visitors a day who come to see the blooms.
However, local authorities said the growing number of tourists has started to disrupt daily life in the area. The city’s mayor shared that officials are facing what he described as a “sense of crisis,” particularly in protecting residents’ quality of life.
Among the concerns are ongoing traffic congestion and increasing litter during busy periods. Some residents have also reported incidents of visitors entering private property without permission, as well as inappropriate behavior in residential spaces.
Because of these issues, the town chose to call off this year’s festival while officials look into ways to better manage visitor numbers and reduce the strain on the community.
Fujiyoshida’s decision comes as several destinations across Japan continue to grapple with the challenges of overtourism, especially during popular travel seasons such as cherry blossom viewing.
So far, the city has not shared details on possible alternatives or future plans for the festival.
