Hunger Games: Catching Fire

When in Manila, you pretty much know that The Hunger Games craze is back with the latest film installment ‘Catching Fire’. If you’re a fan and you want more Hunger Games: Catching Fire related articles, this one is for you. This time, wheninmanila.com will give it a little spin. We will compare the Hunger Games: Catching Fire film to a popular reality TV show: Survivor.

This Hunger Games: Catching Fire article highlights a handful of the current tributes for the 75th Hunger Games, which comprise of former  winners and their Survivor counterparts who won their respective seasons. Warning: The next few pages contain MAJOR SPOILERS on both the Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Survivor: Blood vs Water. If you don’t want to be spoiled, we advise you to stop reading now.

Tribute: Katniss Everdeen (74th Hunger Games)

Survivor Winner:  Amber Mariano (All-Stars)

Amber and Katniss have a similar ‘girl next door’ look that can pretty much disarm their competitors at first. One interesting similarity that both girls possess is that they were given a proposal by their romantic interests after the game was over. Amber said yes to Boston Rob in the All-Stars finale almost 10 years ago and both of them are now happily married with 3 kids.  Katniss and Peeta are ‘married’ in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire film, but unlike Amber, this was a fake marriage. However, time (or the next movie) will tell if Katniss and Peeta will really be happily wedded with kids of their own.

Tribute: Peeta Mellark (74th Hunger Games)

Survivor Winner: Aras Baskauskas (Exile Island)

When you look at both of them, Peeta can be a lost Baskauskas brother. Peeta is the tailor fit ‘pretty boy’ winner of the Hunger Games as much as Aras is for Survivor. Just like Peeta, Aras is also a returning winner of the current season (Blood vs Water). Another similarity between the two men is their ‘engagement’ to their loved ones. In Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Peeta announced to the world of his ‘engagement’ (and eventual ‘secret marriage’) to Katniss as well as ‘baby on the way’. This bodes similar to Aras getting recently engaged to his girlfriend, who is a few weeks pregnant. Talk about similar looks and situations, huh?

Tribute: Finnick Odair (65th Hunger Games)

Survivor Contestant: Brian Heidik (Thailand)

Both men are known not only for their good looks but for their strong in-game alliances. Brian approached his tribe to form a strong alliance in Survivor: Thailand, the same way that Finnick approached Katniss to join her alliance in Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Both winners are known for their physical prowess. Finnick is known for his skills in water combat and his accuracy in throwing the trident. Brian, on the other hand, was one of Survivor: Thailand’s best puzzle solver and physical threat.

Tribute: Mags (9th Hunger Games)

Survivor Contestant: Tina Wesson (Australia)

Just like Tina, Mags is a winner from one of the first Hunger Games. Tina won the second season of Survivor and was one who paved the way for the next 20 seasons thereafter. After a number of years, both women returned to the game that they won. While Tina is on her 3rd time in Survivor (she made her first return in All Stars), her similarity in gameplay with Mags certainly shines in the current season. Tina took the target off her daughter/ally (Katie) and got voted off for Katie to survive the tribal council. (It also helped that Tina’s daughter was immune for that night’s vote). Her ‘sacrifice’ is similar to Mags in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie in a sense that in order for the others to survive, she had to risk her ‘game life’ for it.

Tribute: Johanna Mason (71st Hunger Games)

Survivor Contestant:  Parvati Shallow (Micronesia/Fans vs Favorites 1)

Like Parvati, Johanna didn’t have the look of being  sure winner in her Hunger Games debut. This was how their wins in their respective games were parallel as both weren’t the perceived big threats before they took over and won. In Johanna’s case, she just turned ‘stone cold’ killer mode in the arena and won the 71st hunger games. In Parvati’s case, she let the ‘big threats’ like Ozzy run the show before her all women’s alliance slowly blindsided the men for her to ride to victory in the ‘Fans vs Favorites’ season. As shown in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie, Johanna is pretty outspoken and that’s another similar thing Parvati shares with her.

Tribute: Beetee (35th Hunger Games)

Survivor Contestant: John Cochran (Caramoan/Fans vs Favorites 2)

Both former winners aren’t noted for their physical strength but are known for their strategic and intellectual know-how to win their respective games. While it took Cochran a second time to win his Survivor title, he too proved that it took brains than brawn to outwit, outplay and outlast his competition in Survivor: Caramoan.
