Three Filipino filmmakers have received the privilege of becoming members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as announced by the organization last Monday, July 1.
These filmmakers—Ditsi Carolino, PJ Raval, and Baby Ruth Villarama—were among the 842 individuals invited from all over the world by the organization, which is behind the highly anticipated annual Oscar Awards.
All three represent the documentary category.
PJ Raval, known for his works Call Her Ganda and Before You Know It, took to Instagram to share the good news. “Best. Day. Ever!!!” he captioned.
Baby Ruth Villarama, known for creating Sunday Beauty Queen and Jazz in Love, likewise expressed her gratitude to The Academy on her Facebook profile. “I guess life can really take this young dreamer from Baliuag by surprise. To changing the narrative how the world sees us and how we see ourselves within, it is my honour to raise our three stars and sun; our white, yellow, blue and red to be with the world’s finest in ushering the best documentary films from Asia and the world,” she said.
The 842 invitees also include a long list of big names in Hollywood, including Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Winston Duke (Us), Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), and Letitia Wright (Black Panther). According to The Academy, half of them are women, and 29% represent people of color.
Congratulations to everybody!
