Filipinos are undoubtedly loving and caring. This is why we are so emotional. However, according to the article published by The Guidon, as we emerge into this digital age, our attitude towards love becomes a “modern melancholy.”
Even during the elections, Filipinos did a good job in creating #hugot lines! Ideally, the internet Tagalog slang “hugot” was derived from the phrase “malalim ang pinaghugutan” which literally means “drawn from a deep place” and figuratively means “deeply emotional.”
Such is the above example. Miriam Defensor-Santiago is one of the renowned politicians in the Philippines. She first ran for the presidency back in 1992, but despite her impeccable platforms, she failed the elections. She was dubbed as “the president we (Filipinos) didn’t have.”
Interestingly, when it comes to love, we are now more open-minded and stronger in dealing emotional stress – by flooding our friends with ultimately funny but true #hugot lines on social media!
Sure we’ve seen a multitude of different hugot lines, but these lines are specially made for my fellow call center agents out there, hey!! 🙂

One of the best features of call center agents is being patient. Agents answer approximately 60-100 calls a day (depends if technical or customer service) and if you ain’t got no patience to respond nicely, you are not fit for the job.

Business Process Outsourcing or BPO is one of the blossoming industries in the Philippines. In fact, it became the country’s first choice of career due to its great benefits and a higher salary than a regular rank and file job. Moreover, it also gave a huge amount of hope to newly graduates and somehow, gave them a taste of financial freedom. There was a time that the only job opening was a call center job. Although there are more alternatives (job offers) now than before, BPO jobs still remain a pleasant choice for most people.
Let’s face it, it’s hard not to laugh and relate to these witty Filipino colloquialisms. As we flourish in this day and age, we also become more diverse in coping with emotional problems because these lines are relatable. It seems that everyone has experienced the pain because it’s universal to comment: “wow, hugot yan ah!”
Truthfully, gone are the days where we need to be crazy with someone who cheated on us. Now, we look for the best hugot line and tag them! LOL.
