Our Top 7 Favorite Dishes from Wee Nam Kee’s New Lineup of Deliciousness

Wee Nam Kee isn’t a new name in the Philippines. In fact, we have a great review up on When in Manila here: Wee Nam Kee: The Only Place Where You Can Catch the “Yellow Chicken Fever”! Whenever I’m at Wee Nam Kee, though, I tend to stick to my classic favourites: the Hainanese Chicken Set, which is what Singaporean cuisine is most known for, I think; or the Cereal Prawns (if not both). While having favorite go-to dishes at a restaurant isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can get quite predictable after a while.

So, when I heard that Wee Nam Kee was launching a whole new menu to celebrate its 4th anniversary, I got more than excited to finally discover the “New Culinary Treasures of Singapore” and see exactly what I had been missing out on by trying out the entire plethora of new Singaporean dishes that they have to offer.

While everything we tasted was delicious and delectable, here is the list of our top 7 favorite dishes that you absolutely need to try the next time you are at Wee Nam Kee:

Our Top 7 Favorite Dishes from Wee Nam Kee’s New Lineup of Deliciousness

Wee Nam Kee

Crispy Mantou Bread with Condensed Milk (Php78)

At only Php78, this appetiser is an absolute bargain. In fact, it was so good, we wanted to fill our bellies with mantou bread and condensed milk without even eating anything else anymore. If we didn’t know that we had around a dozen other dishes to look forward to, we might’ve done exactly that. No joke. The mantou bread at Wee Nam Kee has the perfect crisp that goes exceedingly well with the sweet, delicious condensed milk it is paired with.

Wee Nam Kee

Wok-Fried Chicken with Cashews and Sun-Dried Chili (Php270)

As for the main dishes, the wok-fried chicken with cashews and sun-dried chili is an instant palate opener. The flavour of this dish is so full, bold and intense; it is an absolute revelation.

Wee Nam Kee

Cashew Coffee Spareribs (Php298)

For a whole new different flavour experience altogether, try the cashew coffee spareribs, which uses authentic Singapore “kopi” grounds. Coffee and cashews and spareribs? Yes, you read that right! This was the dish that intrigued and surprised us the most. My friend Cheddar and I love coffee and if you are a coffee connoisseur yourself, then you should definitely try this dish, if only for the name and the distinct flavour of it. Even if you aren’t a coffee lover ,though, you shouldn’t be afraid of this dish. Contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t actually taste like coffee at all. It is actually more sweet than bitter and goes really well with the next dish on this list.

Wee Nam Kee

Pineapple Fried Rice with Pork Floss (Php250)

For a twist to regular fried rice, try Wee Nam Kee’s pineapple fried rice with pork floss. This dish is the perfect rice dish to match with the aforementioned main dishes and the ones below. The pork floss gives a surprising and fun new take to regular fried rice and the pineapples add just the right amount of sweetness to it.

Wee Nam Kee

Prawns with Lychees and Peaches (5 pieces for Php495)

Being a seafood and fruit lover, this was hands-down my favorite dish from all of the ones that we tried that night. It’s safe to say that it was everyone else’s favorite, too, seeing as we cleaned the plate in less than 5 minutes. The lychees and peaches give a nice fruity twist to the whole prawn experience and the prawns at Wee Nam Kee are, as always, plump, delicious and well worth the money (one of the reasons why I absolutely love their cereal prawns).

Wee Nam Kee

Stewed Pork Belly with Steamed Buns (Php365)

We also loved the surprisingly fun experience that came with their stewed pork belly with steamed buns, which is basically like DIY siopao but also like those roll-it-yourself duck experiences at Chinese restaurants. I had a lot of fun making my own siopao and since I love all things sweet, I was still happy after we ran out of steamed buns because the stewed pork belly is a delicious experience in itself.

Wee Nam Kee

 Three Flavor Chocolate Truffle Buchi

The three flavour chocolate truffle buchi was also a fun and giggle-filled experience for us. Aside from trying to figure out which buchis had white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate in them, the surprise that comes once you bite into it is sure to ignite a few laughs… though we wouldn’t recommend ordering this on a date unless you are already very comfortable with each other. :p

Overall, it is safe to say that Wee Nam Kee provides more than just delicious Singaporean dishes; they provide a complete experience for you to enjoy with your family, friends or significant other. If you’ve never tried Singaporean dishes before, then Wee Nam Kee would also be the perfect place for you to start. They are considered to be the gold standards of Singaporean Hainanese Chicken, after all. Enjoy the experience! 🙂
