Young Boy Sells Onions Before School To Pay For Brother’s P5 Million Medical Debt

Yan Yihang, an 11-year-old boy living in the Henan province of China, is working to pay off his younger brother’s medical bills. He does so by selling onions every morning in town before heading to school. All the profits from his spring onion stall go towards medical bills amounting to 700,000 yuan or Php 5 million.

The hefty medical costs are for the treatment of Yihang’s 7-year-old brother, Yan Ce. Yan Ce suffers from aplastic anemia, a rare blood disease which stops the body from producing enough blood cells. He was diagnosed in 2015 and received a bone marrow transplant in 2018. His family initially paid for the bills by loaning money from friends and relatives.

Aside from being Yan Ce’s bone marrow donor, Yihang continues to be his hero by earning what he can for the family. He wakes up at 5am every day to pick spring onions and sell them in their vegetable stall. Then he continues to have a full day of classes and prepares to restart the cycle the next day.

In 4 months, Yihang has been able to earn 1,182 yuan or Php 8,500. Though he has been hard at work every day there are times when sales go slow. Still, Yihang struggles on and even refuses to ask for donations as he believes it should be his own effort.
