The Wicked: For Good Trailer is Everything We’ve Hoped For

The first trailer for Wicked: For Good has dropped, and it’s certainly given fans of the beloved Broadway musical and fans of the first movie plenty to discuss! As the second part of the highly anticipated film adaptation, this trailer carries the heavy weight of building on the first movie’s foundation while setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion of Elphaba and Glinda’s story.

Visually, the Wicked: For Good trailer is as vibrant and almost hyper-realistic as the first film. Oz still looks like a fantastical dreamscape with the Emerald City gleaming in all its green glory. However, the snippets of action, including flying monkeys and mobs, promise a more intense and conflict-driven narrative as Elphaba embraces her destiny as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Of course, the performances of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda continue to be a major highlight. Even in short bursts, their vocal prowess and the emotional intensity between them shine. The trailer hints at their growing estrangement and the difficult choices they’ve made, building anticipation for the pivotal moments of how their once-sweet friendship falls apart. Seeing glimpses of Glinda preparing for her wedding to Fiyero juxtaposed with Elphaba’s defiant stance immediately sets up the central conflict.

Perhaps the most impactful moment for long-time fans though is the inclusion of snippets from “For Good.” Hearing the iconic melody, even briefly, was enough to send shivers down my spine. It’s a powerful reminder of the bond between these two characters, even as their paths diverge. The trailer effectively uses this emotional anchor to draw us in.

What’s particularly exciting are the hints of new elements and expanded lore. The trailer introduces classic Wizard of Oz characters like Dorothy and the Tin Man, even if only fleetingly, as well of glimpses of yellow bricks and a poppy field, connecting the Wicked narrative more explicitly to the familiar Ozian canon.

The visual details, such as Elphaba spelling out “Our Wizard Lies” in the sky, are direct nods to the original musical’s imagery and promises to bring those iconic moments to life on screen.
