What To Do in Hong Kong For a Day: A Lantau Island Day Trip

Hong Kong has always been one of the go-to travel destinations for Filipinos for as long as I can remember. Of course, any trip to Hong Kong usually includes a whole day at Hong Kong Disneyland and another whole day of checking out the hottest shopping destinations.

But if you have limited time to explore the beauty of Asia’s World City and you really want to explore more than just the happiest place on earth or the bustling shopping districts, here’s a one-day itinerary that will take you to Lantau Island, Hong Kong’s largest island that’s known for its vibrant cultural experiences.

We got to experience Klook’s Under Parallel Skies Day Tour at Lantau Island, and here’s what you can do in Hong Kong for a day:

Go on a sightseeing boat tour in Tai O Village

Klook Lantau Island Tour

Tai O is a famous fishing village in Hong Kong. This sightseeing boat tour brought us through the village of traditional homes made out of steel, allowing us to peek into the day-to-day lives of Hong Kong fishermen. The village was quiet and serene, much like how it looked in a crucial scene in “Under Parallel Skies”.

After cruising through the village, the boat took us nearer to open waters where dolphins were recently spotted. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating during our tour so we didn’t get to see dolphins, but you just might be luckier!

Visit the food stalls and seafood stores around Tai O

Being a fishing village, you can expect to see and taste lots and lots of seafood around the village. Take the chance to try Hong Kong’s iconic curry fish balls here!

We also got to check out the Tai O Kwan Tai Temple during our walking tour of the village. Even with just a short walk around the area, it was already an eye-opening experience for usโ€”a great opportunity to see what goes on in the lives of people living in Tai O.

Drive to Ngong Ping and see The Big Buddha

Ngong Ping is home to the world-famous 112-ft. tall Big Buddha sitting at the top of the mountain. If you don’t plan on climbing up the stairs all the way to the monument, you can check out the other structures below it, shop from the stores, and maybe see cattle grazing around the area.

Eat a vegetarian meal at the Po Lin Monastery restaurant

After going around the Po Lin Monastery, grab a bite at their vegetarian restaurant. The monastery restaurant has a wide range of vegetarian dishes that just might make you consider a lifestyle change. And don’t worry, they serve white rice!

Ride a cable car from Ngong Ping to Tung Chung

Since you’re already at Ngong Ping, take the opportunity to ride their famous cable car. The 30-minute ride on the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car lets you see the lush mountains of Lantau Island, the Hong Kong International Airport, Tung Chung Bay, and Lantau Island’s tall sprawling buildings. It’s such a thrilling experience to see the island from a bird’s eye perspective!

The Under Parallel Skies Lantau Island Day Tour ends at the MRT Tung Chung Station, but you can definitely make the most out of your day by checking out the Citygate Outlets which is right in front of the MRT station. You just might find your favorite brands on sale!

They also have daily shuttles to the airport, so it’s the perfect place to stay if you’re just about to get on a flight back to the Philippines.

Thanks to these new day tour packages from Klook, you can see, do, and experience so much more of Hong Kong without the hassle.
